TOPIC: North Commuter Parkway Bridge – High Strain Dynamic Load Testing and Challenges with Foundation Installation

Graham Commuter Partners is constructing the North Commuter Parkway Bridge as part of the Bridging to Tomorrow Project of City of Saskatoon which is scheduled to open in October of 2018. A 270 m long six-lane wide new NCP bridge over the South Saskatchewan River will connect the Marquis Industrial area and the University Heights area. The NCP Bridge will help to reduce traffic on existing bridges and improve the connection between Marquis Industrial Area with Saskatoon’s northwest residential developments. One of the major challenges was to drive piles at the west abutment through approximately 18 m of engineered fill without overstressing the piles and selection of an appropriate hammer. This presentation will discuss how the east abutment testing information helped to overcome the west abutment installation problem. We will briefly talk about the basic principles of high strain dynamic load testing (PDA), PDA test procedures and proper practice to determine pile capacity accurately as well as the wave equation analysis for driven piles and set-up phenomena. This presentation will also include a brief discussion about the local geologic setting, foundation parameters, quality control of deep foundation, strength gain in native soil and compacted fill, refined foundation parameters and economical benefit of dynamic load testing.

PRESENTER DETAILS:

Rashedul Chowdhury is a Geotechnical Engineering who has worked at Clifton Associates Ltd. for almost four years. He received a B.SC. degree in Civil Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology and a M.A.Sc. degree in Environmental Systems Engineering (emphasized on Geotechnical Engineering). Rashed has completed his undergraduate thesis on “Finite Element Analysis of Mat Foundation” and graduate thesis on “Unsaturated Shear Strength Properties of Compacted Expansive Soils”. Rashed’s primary practice area includes geotechnical investigation, shallow and deep foundation design, low strain pile integrity testing, high strain dynamic pile load testing, numerical modelling on deep foundation, slope stability, seepage and stress deformation; and dam and dyke inspection.
