Description overall

The pharmacist is in an excellent position to provide education and to help patients with the management of obesity and its chronic complications. These 3 modules will focus on obesity, nutrition and metabolism and how the pharmacist can help patients with weight management using various models and skills.

Individual modules

Module 1 Title: Obesity 101

Description: This module discusses the role of pharmacists in identifying and assessing individuals with obesity and identifying the health consequences of obesity.

Module 1: Learning Objectives

By the end of this session, the learner will be able to:

  • Illustrate the increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity among Canadian adults
  • Describe the CMAJ obesity guidelines 2015
  • Describe the epidemiology and etiology of obesity
  • Discuss current theories regarding genetic and environmental issues pertinent to the development of obesity
  • Identify the health consequences of the obesity epidemic
  • Compute a patient’s body mass index and determine his or her degree of overweight or obesity
  • Discuss pharmacological treatments for obesity

Module 2 Title: Nutrition and Metabolism 101

Description: This module provides the pharmacist with nutrition knowledge at a baseline level and discusses the effect of various dietary patterns on weight management

Module 2: Learning Objectives

By the end of this session, the learner will be able to:

  • Understand the difference between nutritional assessment and nutritional screening
  • Learn practical ways to include nutrition into medication reviews
  • Understand how to read and interpret a nutrition facts table
  • Summarize food facts for carbohydrates, protein and fat
  • Review current dietary patterns and obesity guidelines
  • Review newer evidence about diet and weight management

Module 3 Title: The Pharmacist’s Role in Obesity, Nutrition and Weight Management: Putting it all together

Description: This module summarizes the latest Canadian obesity guidelines and discusses the role of goal setting and motivational interviewing in the management of obesity

By the end of this session, the learner will be able to:

  • Summarize the latest Canadian obesity recommendations
  • Discuss the Stepwise approach to obesity investigations and screening
  • Describe and apply principles of readiness to change, the Transtheoretical model, Motivational interviewing and health coaching principles to weight loss
  • Demonstrate the role of goal setting in weight management
  • Examine the opportunities for pharmacists to be involved in risk assessment during medication reviews
  • Address drug-related issues associated with weight reduction through discussion of case examples
