The Financier (Turcaret) by Alain-René Lesage. Original translation by Joanne Miller and Laurie Steven

Have we got a treat for you!

Our Artistic Director, Laurie Steven, returns to the directing chair to put on an Odyssey twist on Alain-René Lesage's masterpiece with an original translation by herself and Joanne Miller.

This comedic fiasco is about Turcaret, a loan shark and a tax collector, whose sly dealings have come full circle on him. A menagerie of cash-hungry swindlers prey on each other, exposing slaves to passion, excess, and artifice. Only the most single-minded, the most cunning and the most charming will survive.

Don’t miss our vibrant combination of physicality, music, dance and luxurious masks that bring this spicy play to life.

Odyssey Theatre

A Theatre Like No Other!

Odyssey Theatre is renowned for signature masked performances that draw inspiration from Italian Commedia dell'Arte and a range of fairground theatrical arts. This approach lets us conjure imaginative worlds and tell powerful stories that engage wide audiences in a celebration of the human spirit. We create original work and bold adaptations of classics from the international repertoire that revel in social satire and journey into the world of myth and folklore. Through collaboration with artists from diverse theatrical and cultural traditions, we forge new directions in our creative work. The theatre is committed to supporting artists in our field and passionate about nurturing young artists.

We are:

  • An award-winning theatre in our third decade;

  • Ottawa, Canada's premier professional summer theatre, presenting Theatre Under the Stars along the banks of the Rideau River in historic Strathcona Park;

  • A nexus for experimenting, creating, producing and training in physical forms of theatre including mask, Commedia dell'Arte, clown, bouffon, puppetry and dance-theatre;

  • Recognized with sustained operating support from the Canada Council, Ontario Arts Council and the City of Ottawa arts agencies;
