About Maryka Omatsu
In the 1980s Maryka Omatsu was a core member of the National Association of Japanese Canadians’ strategy committee for Japanese Canadian Redress. “Bittersweet Passage”, her 1992 book on the redress movement and settlement, won the Prime Minister’s Award for Publishing and the Laura Jamieson Prize for best feminist book.
Prior to her appointment to the Ontario Court of Justice in 1993, Maryka Omatsu practiced human rights, immigration, environmental, and criminal law. She is a founding member of the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers, an organization with chapters in BC, AB, ON, and the Maritimes, a Member of the Order of Ontario, and the first Canadian to receive the Senator Daniel K. Inouye Trailblazer Award, presented by the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association. She is based in Toronto and Vancouver.
