Event description
Join us for an online four week interactive one-hour family cooking class perfect for families with children aged 7-12 years old.

About this Event

Parents are managing many roles, while children and youth are experiencing ever increasing stress, confusion and anxiety about their own health, families, money and friends.

Parents and youth will learn to cook by preparing a healthy, delicious dinner together while also learning concrete life skills contained in the Fan/Joy Jr. Chef's 3 C’s:

1) COPING strategies for COVID 19 problems including relaxation strategies for anxiety, learning about nutrition, self-regulation skills (using CBT techniques & behavior management to cope with anxiety, depression, anger management, meltdowns & outbursts). Goal is building resiliency in youth and families and these topics will be explored with parents during our weekly online parent support group held on Thursdays 2-3:30pm. Children do not attend this portion of the program, although these topics will be touched on with families during the cooking demos.

2) COLLABORATION as they work together cooperatively by finding shared mutual interests. Goal is to strengthening parent/child attachment during crisis.

3) COMMUNICATION skills focused on identifying and clear verbal expression of feelings, establishing clear boundaries, how to ask for what you need and problem solving skills Goal is to reduce conflicts within the family and improve cooperation, strengthening both resiliency and attachment.

Parents will be provided with weekly recipes and a shopping list of simple, easy to access, affordable ingredients for that week’s recipe. Recipes will largely be adaptable to use what families already have at home in their pantry so the group is accessible to all families . If you have specific dietary restrictions or needs, you can easily adapt these recipes. A Jr. Chef Manual will be given to each family with recipes and weekly work sheets parents can do with their kids on emotional regulation, coping strategies and communication.

A 1.5 hour weekly parent support group will be run by Clinical Social Worker Pam Fanjoy, MSW, RSW and is included in your fee for this program. This will take place online on Thursdays from 2pm-3:30pm. This session will provide parents with useful concrete strategies and emotional support to cope with being at home full time with their children, while also juggling work and home schooling dilemmas. We will also address the emotional impact on their own well-being of social distancing, isolation, financial concerns, parenting challenges and grief from sudden losses experienced from COVID 19.

Note: Investors and donors are welcome to inquire about providing contributions to fund the participation of those who may not otherwise be able to afford the fees for this program.
