AUGUST 23rd 2014 - Second Annual Ontario Haskap and Specialty Fruit Symposium, being held at the Boreal Berry Farm & Winery in Warren, Ontario, presented by the Ontario Haskap Association.
North America's largest haskap event, the Ontario Haskap and Specialty Fruit Symposium is a full day symposium on haskap and specialty fruits.

On Saturday, August 23rd, 2014, a full-day workshop titled "Ontario Haskap and Specialty Fruit Symposium" featuring Dr. Bob Bors from the University of Saskatchewan, Dr. Maxine Thompson from the University of Oregon, Evan Elford from OMAF, and Greg Melien from Boreal Berry Farm & Winery.

Dr. Maxine Thompson
Dr. Maxine Thompson, professor emeritus from the department of horticulture at Oregon State University, is the foremost expert on Honeyberries in the United States, and operates the only active breeding program in the United States to develop honeyberry varieties suitable for the American climate. Dr. Thompson received a BSC and PHD from University of California Davis. Her research focuses on development of cultivars suited for home garden and commercial farm use.
She was recognized by peers with the Frank M. Meyer Medal for Plant Genetic Resources—1997 and the Wilder Medal-- American Pomological Society –2002.
Dr. Bob Bors
Dr. Bob Bors is the Head of the Domestic Fruit Program and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Plant Sciences University of Saskatchewan, and lead's Canada's development of haskap berries. He began in 1999 to head the Fruit Program at the university.. Bob obtained a BSC from the University of Maryland, and a PHD from the University of Guelph. Bob's research focuses on breeding, tissue culture, propagation, disease screening, and interspecific hybridization of hort crops with emphasis on fruit and ornamentals.
Dr. Bors will share his research experience growing and breeding cold-tolerant fruit, as well as techniques for selecting which fruits to grow in the north.
Evan Elford, OMAFRA
New Crop Development Specialist, Ontario Ministry of Rural Affairs.
- Production and marketing information for new, non-traditional, specialty crops including value added processes (predominately edible horticultural specialty crops such as ethno-cultural vegetables, haskap, hops and quinoa, etc.)
- Collaborate on applied research and demonstration projects related to specialty new crop development
Evan Elford will share his research and results from the Simcoe Reasearch Station Haskap trials.
Greg Melien, Boreal Berry Farm & Winery.
A natural, biodynamic fruit farm and winery in Northern Ontario, and Ontario's first commercial Haskap Farm. Boreal Berry Farm & Winery grows Haskap, Dwarf Sour Cherries and Saskatoons and offers tours, educational seminars and demonstrations for growers and gardeners interested in northern hardy fruits.
Greg Melien will discuss growing and marketing haskap in Ontario.
