Ontario Women Anglers - 2019 Mentorship Program

Hello Ladies!

To create even more fishing opportunities for our members, Ontario Women Anglers is offering a Mentorship Progam which will be run as a pilot project in 2019. The program will start in May as we are still in the process of recruiting mentors.

The purpose of the program is to:

  • support new/newer anglers
  • provide new fishing opportunities to experienced anglers that would like to learn about new type of fishing they have not yet tried or to target a new species

How to Register:

  1. Complete the initial registration questions and indicate if you are signing up as a Mentor or a Mentee (or both).
  2. Answer all of the questions related to being a Mentor or Mentee.

IMPORTANT: Please read the following carefully before completing the registration form.

Mentorship Program Policies & Guidelines

In order to participate in this program and to help make it run smoothly, we have a number of IMPORTANT policies and guidelines that both mentors and mentees must agree to. Participation in the program is completely voluntary but we ask that you read these carefully before you register.

ALL participants must be current OWA members and have a current OFAH membership - no exceptions.

  • This is for insurance purposes. Participants must also have a current Ontario Fishing Licence.
  • Once registered, your information will be reviewed and access will be given to the Mentorship Program page on the OWA website once everything is complete. The program page will contain mentor profiles and contact information. Mentees and their information will be included in a database accessible only to the mentors.
  • Mentees can contact a mentor by their preferred method (phone, text, e-mail, FB messenger, etc.) to arrange for an outing. Mentors can also reach out to mentors they would like to invite out on the water.
  • Mentees are expected to bring their own equipment, tackle, bait, etc.to outings unless otherwise arranged with the mentor.
  • If the mentor is using their own boat or if the mentee carpools with the mentor, it is expected that the mentee will contribute to the cost of fuel, launch fees and any other costs. This should be discussed prior to the outing.
  • A mentor may offer 1:1 or small group instruction up to a maximum of 4 mentees.
  • Mentors will log outing information after the event (e.g. date, number of hours fished, general location, number of mentees, species caught/targeted, etc.). This is to track the success of the program. There will also be a feedback form for the mentees to use to let us know how the outing went and for any other information we can use to improve the program.

NOTE: All of the mentors and organizers involved in this program are VOLUNTEERS. They are not guides nor are they compensated for their involvement. As well, participants are not to use this program, or OWA in general, to solicit business for their private enterprises.

IMPORTANT: Some outings may take place on private property or in locations that either the mentor or mentee has put a lot of time into locating and figuring out for themselves. To protect the privacy of these locations and as a courtesy to the person(s) who is sharing them with the mentor/mentee, "spots" used during a mentorship outing are not to be shared with others unless mutually agreed upon by both parties. This is a discussion that should take place before the outing. Participants that disregard this policy, solicit property owners or disclose locations when they have been asked not to, will be removed from the program.

NO alcohol, cannabis or narcotics will be consumed by either the mentor or mentee during OWA outings. The mentor reserves the right to refuse to take the mentee on the fishing outing if they suspect that they are under the influence and vice-versa.

NOTE: As this is a new program, guidelines may be modified as needed without notice.
