Description

OPEN DATA ATLANTIC: WINTER SESSION II

This session welcomes all backgrounds of open data knowledge and experience. To ensure that we are all on the same page for the session, we will introduce Open Data Atlantic and discuss what open data is. This will be followed by a presentation of data analysis for this month's data set (see below - and please share your analysis with everyone at the session!). From here, we will spend time prototyping solutions to identified problems and conclude with sharing ideas & take aways.

Event Agenda:

  • 6:30pm - 6:45pm - Introductions, What is data? What is open data?
  • 6:45pm - 7:15pm - Presentation of Data Analysis
  • 7:15pm - 8:00pm - Solution Development
  • 8:00pm - 8:15pm - Share Solutions
  • 8:15pm - 8:30pm - Take Aways

The Data Set we will be analyzing is the Cultural Assets from the City of Moncton Open Data Portal. Variables of data set include category, sub-category, secondary-sub-categoty, location, and cultural designation. The data set is accessible here:

http://www.moncton.ca/Government/Terms_of_use/Open_Data_Purpose/Data_Catalogue/Cultural_Assets.htm (We recommend choosing the CSV format for downloading the data)

Feel free to take a look at these files, including the information that describes the categories of the data set. And lastly, please remember - no experience in analysis is required to take part in the discussion!

We are incredibly grateful for the support and sponsorship of the Pond-Deshpande Centre and VennInnovation in hosting this event!

If case you weren't able to attend a previous Open Data Atlantic gathering, here is a summary of what we do!:

Open Data Atlantic's mission is to curate and facilitate civic engagement within Atlantic Canada.

What does Civic Engagement mean? Essentially, citizens or organizations that are embracing technology and data to build more efficiency, accountability and transparency in our government systems.

Read more about it here: http://www.knightfoundation.org/features/civictech/r

We've defined our Principles to Success as the following:

  1. To share best practices within the open data movement
  2. To address areas of improvement or barriers (these will arise as we explore various themes)
  3. To learn about data analysis and visualization (data skill set)
  4. To understand the positive impact that data and application of data can have on a community
  5. To create commercialized open products using open data that contribute to the development and growth of our communities

We welcome you to check out our Facebook page and/or twitter to see conversations/thoughts around previous gatherings.
