Open Farms invites you to get a behind-the-scenes look at real working farms.

Learn about raising animals ethically and growing crops sustainably. If you’re interested in sourcing more of your food from local, small scale producers, this is the event for you. Lots of family fun, food trucks, garden and green house tours, animal interaction and education, and hands-on activities.

And remember, these are real working farms so be prepared to get a little mud on your boots!

Fat Chance Farmstead

Fat Chance Farmstead is a small-scale fruit and vegetable farm. Established in 2012, Fat Chance is certified organic and offers high quality healthy food to customers through their Food Box program. Josh and Jen are committed to supporting the local economy and are proud members of the National Farmers Union.

During Open Farms, you can:

  • Learn about growing fruit and vegetables organically
  • Purchase chocolate covered strawberries and organic produce
  • Play in the giant sand pile
  • Have fun in the farmy photo booth
  • Play the "Guess that Farm Implement" Game

Long Road Ecological Farm

An ecologically-run mixed vegetable and livestock farm, Long Road sells produce from its farm gate and through CSA shares, and focuses on Asian greens, Chinese vegetables and pastured meat. Xiaobing and Jonathan have developed a line of Chinese specialty prepared food, called "Farm Sum". Farm Sum includes steamed buns, dumplings, and ferments, which are made of our farm-produced pork, eggs, vegetables and herbs.

During Open Farms, you can:

  • Tour the farm
  • Learn about greenhouse production
  • Purchase fresh and frozen steamed buns at the farm store
  • Enjoy a trail walk

Five Star Farm

Five Star Farm is a small scale farm homestead, where owners Tracey and Curtis raise their family and grow all their own vegetables, fruit, meat, and eggs, as well as hay for their animals. They are passionate about educating young children about farm life and offer a very family-friendly experience.

During Open Farms, you can:

  • See and interact with all the animals
  • Enjoy a hay ride through the hay fields
  • Learn about the haying process and how weather affects crops in Ontario
  • Meet and purchase from local vendors

Maple Ridge Farm

Maple Ridge Farm is all about producing delicious beef, pork and chicken, beautiful flowers, eggs and honey in a way that’s good for you, the animals and the environment.

During Open Farms, you can:

  • Take a self-guided tour of the farm
  • Build your own bouquet with freshly cut Maple Ridge flowers
  • Learn about beekeeping
  • Check out Tractor Alley and play some fun games
  • See the chickens and pigs, and learn about Irish Dexter Cattle, a unique breed in our region
  • Purchase select products from the farm store, including pork, beef, eggs, chicken, honey, and fresh flowers

Food Less Travelled

Local Family Farms features the region’s most vibrant and diverse supply of high-quality, environmentally sustainable local produce, meat, prepared meals, specialty foods, baked goods and unique giftware in the region.

During Open Farms, you can:

  • Meander the store, and purchase local food from across the region
  • Try your hand at roping cattle with Farmer Dave
  • Learn about livestock with cattle, donkey, and ducks from Perry Farm on site
  • Meet Cari from Tryon Farm and purchase their farm products
  • Meet Suzanne from Sparling Natural Foods, and purchase fresh garlic
  • Meet Jeff and Hannah of Wilton Creek Dairy, purchase their goat milk and see some goats
  • Learn recipes and techniques for cooking beef from the Beef Farmers of Frontenac

Sonset Farm

Sonset Farm has been in the Cumpson family for over 75 years. Farming for Orrie, Andrea, and Charlie is more than “making a living” - they each have a strong, passionate commitment to the land, their animals and their community.

Sonset has been certified organic since 1996, and have been proud members of the Organic Meadow Cooperative since 2001.

During Open Farms, you can:

  • Enjoy a self-guided tour of the farm
  • See the chickens, pigs, and cows all grazing in their pastures
  • Observe spelt flour milling demonstrations
  • Learn about the process of milking cows
  • Purchase Sonset products at the on-farm store

Loughborough Heritage Orchard

Located along the shores of beautiful Loughborough Lake, Loughborough Heritage Orchard was lovingly taken on as a restoration project by Marc and Stella in 2014. Although an established orchard dating back to the 1940’s, the huge standard heritage apple trees had been left unattended for over a decade and didn’t have a single blossom or apple on them in 2014. Through careful pruning and planning, this beautiful orchard has come back to life.

During Open Farms, you can:

  • Pick your own apples
  • Purchase lots of apple inspired products from the farm gate store
  • Let the kids enjoy the supervised children's play area
  • Hike the trails along the shore of Loughborough lake and into the sugar bush
  • Enjoy the live music by Arise & Go, featuring fiddle, bagpipe, percussion and guitar
  • Learn about and purchase roses and apple blossom wildflower honey

Sun Harvest Greenhouses

After establishing Sun Harvest Greenhouses in 2002, Allison and Greg started growing hydroponic tomatoes and now Sun Harvest is known for its fresh-picked and tastier tomatoes, English cucumbers and lettuces, available April to November. Their farm market store expands in the summer months to include a variety of field grown veggies that you know are the freshest possible, always picked the same day.

During Open Farms, you can:

  • See the 35' long tomato vines during a guided tours of the hydroponic greenhouse (exclusive access during Open Farms!)
  • Enjoy a meal from Glocca Morra Grill featuring Sun Harvest in-season produce and other local ingredients
  • Roam through the flower greenhouse
  • Purchase field-grown seasonal produce and a 'Porch Package' to decorate your home for the fall season: a fall mum, corn stalks, pumpkin and a straw bale
  • Meander through a half acre of flowers in the cutting garden
  • Enjoy flower bouquet making demonstrations

Otter Creek Farms

Otter Creek is all about progress and innovation. DJ and Rebecca use innovative scientific tools to identify and select optimal traits in breeding stock to produce Wagyu beef that grades well beyond ‘prime’.

During Open Farms, you can:

  • Enjoy a meal from the Otter Creek Food Truck
  • Purchase Wagyu beef boxes
  • Learn about Wagyu Cattle and Embryo Transfer Technology
  • See Wagyu calves in the barn and field

Frontenac County Plowing Match

The Frontenac County Plowing Match has been held annually for more than 100 years. It gives farmers a chance to celebrate their traditions and engage in some friendly competition.

During Open Farms, you can:

  • Watch as local farmers work compete to plow the straightest furrow, using both tractors and horses
  • Enjoy local entertainment, wagon rides, local food, and a vendor village
  • Learn about traditional farming and plowing methods
