Event description

Description

Welcome to the 2017-18 OPMA season! We have a fantastic year of events lined up for you.

In response to member feedback, we’ve decided to slightly change the format of our events: this year, we will charge a nominal fee for our events. This will allow us to improve the quality of our events and provide better networking opportunities, and to provide you with a light dinner at the event - so now you don’t have to worry about grabbing a sandwich if you’re rushing over from work.

You can purchase tickets before each event at either the Early Bird special price ($15) or Regular price ($20 at the door and within 48 hours of the event. Credit card ONLY for at the-door ticket purchase).

You can also purchase our OPMA Supporter yearly membership ($100): Register once and get access to all the monthly networking events in the OPMA 2017-18 season. Show your support for the organization and make it easier to expense your tickets.

We're thrilled to kick off the year with a topic so relevant to Canada's Capital: Autonomous Vehicles and the Disruptions in Transportation Products and Services. Ottawa has the expertise, technology and innovation ecosystem to drive the evolution and advancement of driverless cars. With the exciting developments on the radar for our city, we're excited to welcome our keynote speaker, Barrie Kirk, Executive Director of the Canadian Automated Vehicles Centre of Excellence (CAVCOE).

One hundred years ago, the Model T Fords were coming off the production line. At the same time, there were other very disruptive innovations in our ancestors' lives: airplanes, electricity, radio, paved roads, sewage treatment, etc. Those early years of the 20th century were a time of tremendous change to individual lives, our cities, society and the world.

If we call those Cars 1.0, then today the first generation of Cars 2.0 is with us: autonomous, connected, and electric (ACE) vehicles.

The next generation of fully-autonomous cars will lead to changes in our lives and cities that will be every bit as substantial as the changes in the 20th Century with the introduction of Cars 1.0. These changes will provide many new business opportunities as well as challenges for a wide range of businesses. ACE vehicles will also impact virtually every department of every level of government.

One of these changes is the convergence between the auto sector and the technology sector. By about the mid- 2020's, technology will represent 40-60% of the value of a car. The business opportunities for the technology sector include both hardware and software, such as processing, data storage, sensors, connectivity, mapping, algorithms, AI, cyber-security, reliable operating systems, vehicle control software, software development tools, and of course, system integration.

But the biggest business opportunity of all is data. ACE vehicles will harvest huge volumes of data about the vehicle occupants and the surroundings. One car company has estimated that the value of the data by an ACE vehicle is worth three times the value of the car itself.
