Event description
The 3rd installment of Hart Houses’ Centennial Dialogue Series.

About this Event

In an era of rising populism, cynicism and challenges to the post-war institutions of the West, what’s a good global citizen to do? What does it take to engage? To work collectively to tackle the most pressing and difficult issues of our time – issues like the climate crisis, economic and social justice, global human rights and disarmament - issues that transcend borders and require cooperation?

The inimitable Stephen Lewis, celebrated human rights activist, former UN Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa and named as one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world, explores this question in the third event of Hart Houses’ Centennial Dialogue Series.

This event reimagines a Hart House debate held in 1957 and featuring then U.S. Senator John F. Kennedy as guest speaker, and a 20-year old Stephen Lewis as one of the students debating the resolution “This House Believes the United States has Failed in its Responsibility as a World Leader.”

In this dialogue, Stephen Lewis returns as a celebrated and inspired speaker. Following his keynote, there will be a moderated conversation between Mr. Lewis and three U of T students and young alumni exploring their perspectives on international engagement and change-making.

Legendary social justice advocate and journalist Michele Landsberg will open the event, celebrated Canadian broadcaster, Shelagh Rogers, moderates.

Don’t miss this essential night of ideas, sharing and listening.
