Why Food Safety Matters
Safe food handling helps prevent illness from food and drinks. Anyone who prepares food can benefit from food safety training.

Who Needs Food Safety Certification
Since July 1, 2018, Ontario’s Food Premises Regulation 493/17 requires that every food business or commercial kitchen has at least one certified food handler on site at all times during operation.
This includes:

  • Restaurants and cafés
  • Grocery store hot counters
  • Catering or production kitchens
  • Home-based commercial kitchens
  • School, church, or community centre kitchens
  • Special event food vendors
  • Institutional kitchens (e.g., hospitals, long-term care)

Exam and Certification Details

  • You need a score of 70% or higher to pass.
  • Certificates are valid for 5 years.

Available Languages
Translated exams are available in up to 18 languages, including:
Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Farsi (Persian), Greek, Gujarati, Hindi, Korean, Macedonian, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Tamil, Urdu, Vietnamese, and Cantonese.
