Event description

Description

Welcome to the first in a series of four orchard care workshops! In the May workshop, we'll focus on the things that you should be noticing as the orchard comes to life for another season. It's important to notice the signs of disease and pests cycles looking for a foothold. And just as important to know how to respond.

Lorne Jamieson, lifelong orchardist, will help us identify potential early-season threats and talk about treatment regimes for holistic and organic orchardists. In addition, he'll give the best practices in compost application, mulching, mowing, and all the other things you need to think about in May, whether you have a couple backyard trees, or even a small commercial orchard.

The workshop will be held at Heartwood Farm & Cidery among the trees and animals that make it a great demonstration site for techniques in regenerative agriculture. We will serve a farm lunch and leave plenty of time for discussion and discovery.

This spring workshop is the first in a series of five Orchard Care Workshops:

Summer care (mid-June): summer pruning, hand-thinning, foliar analysis
Late summer grafting (mid-August): fruit tree propagation, bud grafting
Harvest (October): soil testing, picking, pressing, cider-making, winterizing the orchard
Winter pruning (February): pruning and shaping dormant trees
