Event description

Description

Join us for the second of our Orchard Care workshop series - Grafting Fruit Trees. Grafting is the method by which we propagate trees that produce the same fruit as the parent tree.

We will be joined by Derek Greenly, who is a nurseryman and agroforester from Warkworth, Ontario. He has been growing and grafting fruit and nut trees since 2014. He operates his own fruit and nut tree nursery, Summergreen Tree Crops, and is establishing broadacre agroforestry systems in Warkworth, Ontario.

The day will include an overview of the art & science of grafting:

- Overview
- Scionwood & rootstock selection
- Various grafting techniques
- Timing
- Aftercare

With a strong conceptual background, we will then practice bud-grafting some of the rootstock in Heartwood's own tree nursery!

As always, a farm-fresh lunch will be served, and once the workshop is over, participants are welcome to continue the conversations they began in our tasting room.
