The transition from academia to industry can be challenging but rewarding. Hear from three scientists thriving in careers in pharma!

About this Event

Summary:

For many scientists, transitioning to a career in industry may seem attractive but daunting. The ORT at UHN invites you to join our discussion with three scientists working in the pharmaceutical industry to hear about their experiences transitioning from graduate school to pharma. They'll share some tips and tricks on how to break into industry!

Join us on January 28th from 5-6 pm for a virtual panel discussion and Q and A with:

Dr. Julia Hanchard, Senior Scientist Drug Discovery at Aphaia Pharma Ltd.

Kimberley Lifeso, MSc., Oncology Medical Science Liaison Manager at AstraZeneca.

Dr. Manisha Talukdar, Medical Advisor at AstraZeneca.

All are welcome to attend! Zoom links will be sent to registrants prior to event.

Speaker Bios:

Dr. Julia Hanchard: Julia currently leads the enteroendocrine drug discovery program at Aphaia Pharma, a clinical stage start-up company that innovates novel therapies for metabolic disease. Over the last 2-years at Aphaia, Julia has led projects spanning discovery, pre-clinical and clinical phases of enteroendocrine drug discovery research. Julia’s technical expertise and thought leadership were developed through training at the University of Toronto where she earned MSc and PhD degrees from the Department of Molecular Genetics. Julia’s graduate research leveraged untargeted metabolomics and whole genome sequencing to uncover functions of uncharacterized genes to both annotate the genome and understand the molecular basis of metabolic disease. Julia’s passion for drug discovery research was propelled by her time spent working at UHN in discovering anti-cancer therapeutics and illuminating the dysregulation of molecular pathways downstream of oncotargets. Julia’s initial affinity for research was realised through multiple interdisciplinary research-based work terms undertaken throughout her BSc in the Honours Biochemistry Co-op program at the University of Waterloo where she developed functional metagenomic screens to identify enzymes for use in the lignocellulosic biofuel industry.

Kimberley Lifeso, MSc: After completing an MSc in Immunology at U of T, Kim began her career in the pharmaceutical industry as a sales representative. She then transitioned to medical affairs, holding roles as an oncology medical science liaison, an associate director of scientific training in oncology, and is now currently managing the oncology medical science liaison team for AstraZeneca in Canada.

Dr. Manisha Talukdar: Manisha completed her PhD in Molecular Genetics at the University of Toronto. Prior to starting her career in the pharmaceutical industry, Manisha had a diverse background that ranged from digital healthcare consultant, marketing and business development analyst for a healthcare startup, to market access analyst for a medical device company. Manisha began her career in medical affairs as a medical science liaison for AstraZeneca Canada. She is currently the national medical advisor managing the respiratory portfolio for AstraZeneca Canada.
