Event description

Description

How can we make our cities great places to live, work, and play? Our cities flourish when we design them for the needs and interests of our communities.

Mid-sized cities have a unique trait – many are full of underutilized physical assets such as vacant storefronts, abandoned factories, or old post offices that can be used by and for the community. Leaders in mid-sized cities have started applying new approaches to reanimating, reinvigorating and innovating in these spaces.

Join us on February 21, 2018 for a tour of The Tannery’s past and present. Originally home to the Lang Tanning Company, considered Kitchener's first major industry and once the largest supplier of sole leather in the British Empire – it’s now home to Communitech, the biggest source of startups in the city. We’ll explore the historical uses of The Tannery and the new and innovative ways it is being used by Communitech.

The tour will be followed by a panel discussion with four community leaders on how some of Ontario’s mid-sized cities are transforming underutilized public spaces. We will follow up these talks with a question period to engage with speakers directly.

This event complements a report, Our City, Our Spaces which explores the adaptive reuse of four spaces in Hamilton, Peterborough, Kitchener and Brantford.

The tour will begin at 6pm and the panel discussion will begin at 7pm. This event is free and open to the public. All are welcome. Please register in advance to attend the tour, the panel, or both.
