Event description

Description

How can we make our cities great places to live, work, and play? Our cities thrive when we design them for the needs and interests of our communities.

Mid-sized cities have a unique trait – many are full of underutilized physical assets such as vacant storefronts, abandoned factories, or old post offices that can be used by and for the community. Leaders in mid-sized cities have started applying new approaches to reanimating, reinvigorating and innovating in these spaces.

Join us on October 26, 2017 for a tour of Peterborough’s The Mount Community Centre. The the historic Mount St. Joseph property has been redeveloped into an exciting social hub offering affordable housing, a chapel and community gathering space. The tour will be followed by a panel discussion with three community leaders on how Ontario’s mid-sized cities are transforming underutilized public spaces for community benefit. We will follow up these talks with a question period during which you will get to engage with our speakers directly.

This event coincides with the release of a report, Our City, Our Spaces (PDF, 7.2MB), which explores the adaptive reuse of four spaces in Hamilton, Peterborough, Kitchener and Brantford.

The tour will begin at 6:15 pm and the panel discussion will begin at 7:00pm in the Auditorium. This event is free and open to the public. All are welcome.
