Event description

Description

Kayla Hounsell is an award-winning journalist with more than a decade of experience in the field. In this frank discussion, Kayla will speak about her experiences in Africa, and why she believes international reporting is important.

Kayla took her first trip to Africa while still a student at Carleton University's School of Journalism in Ottawa. Under the guidance of a Canadian professor, she spent two months in Rwanda training journalism students. The experience ignited a passion to tell stories from this part of the world. In 2015, Kayla travelled to South Sudan to work on behalf of CTV News and Journalists for Human Rights. While in this active war zone, she helped trained South Sudanese reporters in human rights reporting and did some reporting of her own that aired on national television upon her return. In 2016, Kayla was awarded an International Development Reporting Fellowship from the Aga Khan Foundation of Canada and the Canadian Association of Journalists, which allowed her to return once again, this time to West Africa to produce a documentary for CTV’s W5 on the aftermath of Ebola in Liberia. These days, Kayla is working on writing a true crime book with Nimbus Publishing.

Please join the Canadian International Council Halifax Branch for this talk. Admission is free, registration is required. Light refreshments will be served. To find out more about the CIC Halifax Branch, please visit: http://thecic.org/branches/halifax/
