Event description

Description

In the shadow of hegemonic ideals of Whiteness in gay/queer men’s communities lie subversive voices of gay men of colour yearning to breathe free. The rich tapestry of their lives have, to date, been narrowly defined through the biomedical discourse of HIV/AIDS. Despite their lives being shaped by other social forces, such as White racism, the mechanisms employed to resist and cope in the face of such adversity have not been well studied. Yet this knowledge is key to understanding the group’s resilience, and to developing a socioculturally responsive model of coping for research and practice in Canada. Centring the everyday realities of racialized queer subjectivity in this way gives voice to their accounts of racial struggle and transformational resistance. The latter is an injunctive for a queer future that exhorts innovative possibilities for social action and community advancement.
