This walking tour, lasting 2 to 3 hours, complete with picnic lunch and traditional music, will take you deep into the heart of coastal culture.

Your tour begins at the top of Old Maid Hill overlooking the picturesque community of Durrell. A photographer’s paradise, Old Maid Hill provides a panoramic view of the great Atlantic ocean, majestic icebergs, and rugged cliffs. While you’re breathing the fresh air, an accordionist will delight you with toe-tapping tunes. Feeling the rhythm? You can learn the basics of playing the musical spoons on our hand-crafted Newfoundland spoons!

At each stop along the way, your guide will share local legends, fascinating insights, and personal experiences, bringing this magnificent area to vivid life.

Strolling at a leisurely pace with your small group, you'll step off the beaten path into gorgeous green fields where wild berries grow. Arriving at Bath’s Beach and Rogers Cove, the ocean is there to greet you along with the exotic flora/fauna and marine life of the cove.

With Burnt Island in the distance and a sea bird soaring overhead, your guide – a descendant of the early settlers – will sing the songs and tell the stories of the outport people.

The imprint of the former vegetable gardens, the root cellar, and the remains of the old water well still stand amidst the scenic splendor of Burnt Island Tickle.

Following your picnic lunch, join your fellow strollers for the journey back to the Durrell Museum atop Old Maid Hill.

All participants will receive a cooler bag with picnic lunch. The backpack-style cooler bag features two comfortable shoulder straps and a non-toxic ice substitute pack to keep your lunch cool and fresh.

The rental of the cooler bag and ice pack is included in the tour price as is the picnic lunch. Your lunch will include:

  • Pure, natural spring water from the wilds of Newfoundland

  • Fresh bread roll

  • Personal jar of Newfoundland berry spread (blueberry, partridgeberry, or bakeapple)

  • Gourmet chicken wrap

  • Apple

  • Traditional Purity Hard Bread / Sweet Bread*

  • Milk Chocolate with Newfoundland blueberries

*Hard Bread, also known as Hard Tack, has been a dietary staple of Newfoundlanders for many years. Your tour guide will uncover the history of this ancient sea biscuit and its role in the culinary life of outport Newfoundland. A sampling of traditional Purity Syrup will complete the taste test.

Join us on this active tour and discover the fascinating story of the outport people - the early adventurers who dared to settle on Twillingate Island, a rock in the Atlantic Ocean!

Amazing rock formations carved through millennia by the relentless Atlantic Ocean offer a breath-taking backdrop as you savour traditional cuisine. We look forward to meeting you for an unparalleled and unforgettable experience!
