Course Description:

This one day course is a comprehensive overview of the management of individuals after a concussion with an emphasis on those with persistent symptoms. Early and late management including return to play and return to learning and return to work will be reviewed. The course will discuss domains of assessment such as vision, vestibular, balance, cognitive and autonomic and give strategies for treatment. The 3 key clinically applicable take home points are: 

a) strategies for reduction of common symptoms such as headache, noise sensitivity, light sensitivity and headache 

b) the importance of graduated return to activities and provide a framework for therapists to

teach their patients the principles of planning and pacing 

c) the importance of the vision system on function, common visual issues after concussion and

how to assess and treat them


Morning coffee/pastries, and a catered lunch will be provided.

Shannon McGuire has been practicing as a physiotherapist since graduating from McMaster University in 1996. She currently works at St. Joseph’s Health Care London –Parkwood Institute on the Outpatient Acquired Brain Injury Team. She became interested in Vision Rehabilitation in 2007 and established the first inpatient Neuro-Optometric Rehab Service in Canada at Parkwood Institute in 2007 and expanded it to include an Outpatient Vision Clinic in 2010. She is a Clinical Lecturer at University of Western Ontario’s School of Physical Therapy. She has presented about concussion at conferences internationally and started teaching full day Concussion Management Workshops across Canada in 2012 and took the show on the road last summer to Australia and New Zealand.

Open to which professions:

PTs, OTs, Physicians, Kinesiologists, Nurses, SLPs, Optometrists, Athletic Therapists

All participants are responsible for ensuring that they have a current license to practice from CPTBC. If participants are from out of BC, they must acquire a Courtesy License from CPTBC.


For Courses, refunds are issued for cancellation requests received 1 month prior to the event, less a $100 cancellation fee. No refund will be issued for cancellation requests received less than 1 month prior to the event.
