Description

Explore the world with a child-like sense of awe and wonder while learning about the rainforest ecology of Pacific Spirit Regional Park that surrounds UBC.

On this 2.5-hour adventure, we will learn about the fascinating rainforest ecosystem and how to identify important trees, mushrooms and plant species in the local ecosystem.

We will also learn about what’s been coined the “Wood Wide Web”, the interconnected mycorrhizal fungi networks that link together the plants and trees in the soil and make the miracle of life on Planet Earth possible.

Mushrooms are the fruiting, reproductive bodies of these fungal networks in the soil and they play a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance. New scientific research is shining a spotlight on just how crucial fungi are to the evolution of life on Planet Earth — without fungi, there would be no forest, nor any humans to appreciate it.

We will also learn Sensory Immersion Meditation, a walking meditation practice where you bring your full attention to your sensory awareness of the forest. It is easy to learn and it provides you with an ideal method for quieting the chattering of your mind so you can achieve a deeper state of relaxation and heightened awareness of the sights, smells and sounds around you.

Sensory Immersion Meditation is a useful practice for anyone who struggles with traditional sitting meditation but wants to experience the enormous benefits of quieting and refreshing your mind through meditation. It is an ideal practice if you spend a lot of time outside because it allows you to be more immersed in a state of mindful awareness while exploring in nature.

November is one of the peak months for observing mushrooms in our local forest. Part rainforest ecological learning adventure, part forest meditation workshop, this adventure is guaranteed to be an unforgettable experience.
