About this event
30TH ANNIVERSARY SCREENING!
In an unorthodox measure to keep the home fires burning during WWII, the women’s pro baseball league is formed (AAGPBL). A motley group of women do their part for the war effort. In their “art of fielding”, they have what it takes to lift morale with speed, agility and the power, rabid baseball fans have come to expect.
ABOUT THE FILM
“Because there's no crying in baseball. THERE'S NO CRYING IN BASEBALL! No crying!” is the most famous line in A League of Their Own. In fact, it’s one of the most popular lines in cinema. But it is far from the best line in the film. The best line is "It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard, is what makes it great."
A League of Their Own is beloved for its pioneering historical fiction. The central reason is Marshall’s skilled direction and love of the sport. Marshall understood the poetry of baseball, and how the sights and sounds translate perfectly to film. Baseball is a storytelling sport. It starts like a western, with a showdown between two people, and then the players embark on a journey home, overcoming obstacles.
Marshall taps into what’s at the core of baseball and movies ——nostalgia. Nostalgia’s rooted in homesickness. Baseball is about getting home. Throw them together in a historical story, of soldiers far from home, and a group of women saving the day by keeping morale going back home, and you have a top tier sports movie, a great baseball movie and maybe the greatest nostalgia movie of all time. - VANYA GARRAWAY
