Panel: Leveraging Funded Academic Research for Your Business

Presenter: Mitacs, Brent Wennekes, Director, Business Development (moderator) Panelists: Cypher Environmental, Todd Burns, CEO NSERC: Frank Nolan, Research and Innovation Development Officer IRAP-NRC Prairies Region: Joe Cattani, Industrial Technology Advisor WTC Winnipeg: Éric Courcelles, Director of Strategy This seminar will feature Cypher Environmental, a local environmental technology company that has been extremely successful at innovating new products with support from/collaboration with multiple research-funding organizations and academic researchers. Attendees will hear from Todd Burns, Cypher’s CEO, about his research, development, and innovation journey. Burns will form part of a panel featuring local representatives from Mitacs, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), Industrial Research Assistance Program – National Research Council Canada (IRAP-NRC) and World Trade Centre Winnpeg (WTC Winnipeg) who will share insights on how businesses can leverage Research & Development support to address their business and innovation challenges. Attendee will learn the following: 1. How to address technical/business challenges with funded academic research support (with examples) 2. General information on who to approach and how the respective funding mechanisms work 3. The Cypher Environmental journey towards innovation, commercialization and export NOTE: Please feel free to bring a snack or brown bag lunch to make the most of this session. Todd Burns is the president and owner of Cypher Environmental Ltd., a leading global provider of environmental solutions for dust control, soil stabilization, and water treatment, based in Winnipeg. Todd’s passion for the environment, combined with his entrepreneurial spirit and educational background in Business Administration, gained at Red River College, has helped define Cypher’s innovation strategy, which is currently a key factor in driving the growth of the company.
