Hey YYC! Come join a group of like-minded makers that are craving for a place and space to make awesome things. Starting with a creative exercise, we will put to bed all your fears and inhibitions of 'not being an artist or creative person' - whatever that is! Then we will dive in to our workshop project - creating gorgeous paper flowers. Enjoy great company, drinks, and a welcoming atmosphere at Sonoma.
What do I get for the event fee?
Ticket price includes:
- admission for 2.5 hours of making. cool. shit.
- an exercise to open creative channels
- all supplies
- your creation 1-2 unique paper flowers
What do you mean exactly by "all supplies"?
Supplies will include an assortment of Italian crepe paper, instruction sheet, floral tape and stem wires. (This is a pretty technical craft, and in our experience it is likely you will only have enough time to make one, or two at most at the event.)
What time do I need to be there?
At least 15 minutes prior if you are attending with friends and would like to sit together. If you are planning on eating dinner, you are absolutely encouraged to eat during the workshop, however we have found most people like to focus on the craft. Feel free to come early and eat beforehand, or you are welcome to stay after and enjoy some eats.
Where do I park?
There is plenty of parking available on the streets near Sonoma - 6th street, 8th avenue, 7th street, 9th avenue that is free after 6pm. There is also a large parking lot across 9th avenue from Sonoma, as well as Centennial Parkade (brick building) across 6th street from Sonoma. These lots have discounted rates after 6pm.
What do I need to bring?
An open-mind and positive energy.
What if I'm not an artist or creative person?
No such thing. We believe everyone has an innate ability to create; for some people it just takes a little more practice than others, or, more time to find the right creative outlet. That is why we offer all different creative workshops that teach and highlight varieties of skills. "Every child is an artist. The problem is how we remain an artist once we grow up." - Pablo Picasso
What if I haven't done art or a craft since Kindergarten?
No problem. Our workshop was created for people with all levels of artistic abilities. Whether you've never picked up a paint brush or create on a regular basis, you can always learn and develop new skills from our creative workshops!
Who will be teaching the workshop?
Your primary facilitator will be Meagan McKenzie. Meagan graduated from the Alberta College of Art and Design with a BFA in Painting, followed by an honours degree in Psychology from the University of Calgary. In 2012, she left Canada and spent 3 years travelling Asia, Oceania, and lived in New Zealand. Back in Calgary, she now spends her time painting and working in Social Media & Communications.
