Event description

Description

This Seminar will actually take place over three dates: Tuesday, September 5, Tuesday, October 2, and Tuesday November 7. On each day we will meet from 1pm until 4:30pm. To complete the seminar, participants must attend all 3 sessions.

To be eligible participants will need to have training at the graduate level, and have some experience with child welfare or other forensic settings. They will also need to commit to produce a PCA over the course of the 3 months as an academic exercise, but on a family known to the participant. (The assessment will be produced in a non-identifying manner.)

September 5: This first session is an introduction to the Steinhaur model, an introduction to its guidelines, and an overview of the applicable psycho-social theories essential for completing a good PCA. (I will not go into depths with the theories. If folks need coaching and instruction on those, we can do that separately).

After the first session participants will have a month to produce a very preliminary draft of a PCA. The goal here is to give folk a chance to deeply review and apply the guidelines and theories to a real case

October 2: In the second session we will review the 9 guidelines in greater detail and answer the substantive questions folk may have about the application of theory. Understanding the legal limits of child welfare authority as they affect clinical formulation will also be reviewed. We will not review each person's draft assessment, but we will engage as a group reviewing each guideline and answering questions.

After the second session it is expected that participants will substantially complete their PCA and will bring the product and their questions to the third session.

November 7: Each participant will be asked to make a 10 minute presentation on the assessment they completed. We will review and critique, as a group, some of the conclusions and recommendations made in the assessments, and I will answer any final questions people have. The remainder of the third session will focus on the nature of providing evidence as an expert witness. The production of a comprehensive CV, an overview of the nature and expectations of expert witnesses, and a review of the kinds of questions asked during qualification will be discussed.

Finally, I will provide written feedback on all completed PCA'S submitted to me within a week after the final session. Registration costs will include:

Copies of the Steinhauer manual, guidelines and clinical example

A copy of a past, non-identifying PCA's that I've conducted

Handouts on all of the theories I will review

Excerpts from NS, PEI, NB child welfare legislations

A copy of a transcript of my examination as an expert witness from a case I did several years ago, and

A hand written review of the assessment that you submit to me.

The sessions will be conducted in seminar fashion in the boardroom at my office with lots of interaction, so attendance will be capped at 5, plus my observing interns. There will be no discounted seats for this seminar. No refunds will be made for missed sessions though individual coaching may be offered as a substitute in extreme circumstances

After the workshop, persons who wish to formally consult on the development of actual assessments may contract me at my posted consulting rate. Individuals who wish ongoing supervision of a general nature may contract me at my standard clinical rate.

FAQs

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

There is a Metro Park, multi-level garage at 1554 Hollis Street, just 1 block south of Founders' Square. There is also a small parking lot at 1730 Granville Street about 1.5 blocks away. The parking is cheaper in some of the outdoor parking lots off Lower Water Street. Another option is to park for free elsewhere and to walk or take Metro Transit or the ferry. This is my preferred method of getting to work.
