About this event

This Seminar will actually take place over three dates as noted above. On each day we will meet from 2:00pm until 5:00pm. To complete the seminar, participants must attend all 3 sessions.  In response to popular request, this workshop will be conducted online using  Attendees will need to ensure they have the appropriate videoconferencing technology to participate.

To be eligible participants should have training at the graduate level, and have some experience with child welfare or other forensic settings. They will need to commit to produce a PCA over the course of the 3 months as an academic exercise, but on a family known to the participant. (The assessment will be produced in a non-identifying manner.)  Individuals without graduate level training may take this workshop, but, depending on the jurisdiction in which they live and work, they may not be qualified to conduct assessments as recognized experts in courts.

This first session is an introduction to the Steinhauer model, an introduction to its guidelines, and an overview of the applicable psycho-social theories essential for completing a good PCA. (I will not go into depths with the theories. If folks need coaching and instruction on those, we can do that separately).

We will review an assessment or two as examples of the work we will do together.

After the first session participants will have a month to produce a very preliminary draft of a PCA. The goal here is to give folk a chance to deeply review and apply the guidelines and theories to a real case.  Students will submit their drafts two days prior the second session.  Students will be encouraged to share their draft with each other, though this is not mandatory.

In the second session we will review the 9 guidelines in greater detail and answer the substantive questions folk may have about the application of theory. Understanding the legal limits of child welfare authority as they affect clinical formulation will also be reviewed. We will not review each person's draft assessment, but we will engage as a group reviewing each guideline and answering questions. After the second session it is expected that participants will substantially complete their PCA and will bring the product and their questions to the third session.  Students will be asked to submit their assessments 2 days before the third session.

Each participant will be asked to make a 5 minute presentation on the conclusion and recommendation section of the assessment they completed. We will review and discuss these as a group, and I will answer any final questions people have.

The remainder of the third session will focus on the nature of providing evidence as an expert witness. The production of a comprehensive CV, an overview of the nature and expectations of expert witnesses, and a review of the kinds of questions asked during qualification will be discussed.

Registration costs will include:

Perpetual access to a google drive that will have copies of the Steinhauer manual, guidelines and clinical example; A copy of several, non-identifying PCA's that I've conducted; handouts on all of the theories I will review; a copy of a transcript of my examination as an expert witness from a case I did several years ago; and a copy of a draft Field Itinerary that describes how I arrange meetings and access supervision when in the field.

The sessions will be conducted online in seminar fashion using the platform.  There will be lots of opportunity for interaction.  Attendance will be capped at 10 participants.  Discounted seats for this seminar may be available to former interns of The Peoples' Counselling Clinic and other Associates of the Clinic. No refunds will be made for missed sessions though registered participants may access a recording of a session they have missed.  Paid, individual coaching may be offered as a substitute in extreme circumstances After the workshop, persons who wish to formally consult on the development of actual assessments may contract me at my posted consulting rate. Individuals who wish ongoing supervision of a general nature may contract me at my standard clinical rate.

What's the refund policy?

A full refund will be made to individuals who have registered and paid in advance up to one week before the start of the workshop. If for some reason the workshop is cancelled, registrants will be refunded in full.
