Event description

Description

To bring about hope and healing, Park Memorial Funeral Home is honoured to bring the independent, award winning film, Getting Grace, to Edmonton for its Canadian debut. The comedy/drama stars and is co-produced, co-written and directed by award winning actor, Daniel Roebuck.

Getting Grace is about a teenaged girl, Grace (Madelyn Dundon), who is dying of cancer. Grace visits a funeral home to find out what will happen to her after she dies, but ends up teaching the awkward funeral director, Bill Jankowski (Daniel Roebuck), how to truly live - something he had long forgotten how to do. Grace is dying but through her wacky sense of humor and love of life she lives more fully than all those around her. Through her journey, she teaches all of us how to live, how to have hope, and how to continue living with grace after a loss.

Daniel Roebuck himself along with Madelyn Dundon, the stars of Getting Grace, will be in Edmonton for the film’s run at the Garneau Theatre, August 11 – 13, 2018.

It is Park Memorial’s hope that this beautiful film and its message about living life to its fullest --- while also talking openly and honestly about death, dying and grief --- will be the start of an ongoing conversation that happens, not just quietly behind funeral home doors, but openly between family members and friends.

People are often inherently fearful of death and funeral homes, but talking about it reduces fear, brings comfort and unites us all as humans who share the experience of mortality.

Park Memorial feels that this movie – with its focus on both what it really means to live your best life and in experiencing loss– can help us and others start a conversation that may be uncomfortable, but necessary.

As a funeral home in this community, we are in a unique position to help people understand that the only time you are guaranteed with those you love is RIGHT NOW. We don’t know what the future holds. We want to help bring hope. To eliminate regret and unanswered questions. To educate. And, with the help of many others, to assist in healing those who are grieving.

At the end of each show time, Daniel Roebuck and Madelyn Dundon along with some of Edmonton’s hope and healing organizations will hold an open panel discussion of the film and its subject matter. Park Memorial, Momentum Walk-In Counselling Society, Canadian Mental Health Association - Edmonton Region, and Pilgrims Hospice Edmonton have also come together in an unprecedented way to all be on hand at each film showing to answer questions, provide support and resources and to guide these conversations within the community.
