Description

Kerry Swanson has directed some amazing partnerships including the Indigenous Culture Fund at the Ontario Arts Council, Toronto Art’s Council Indigenous Arts Project program and others.

A key ingredient for success in arts and design is the ability to form and sustain positive and valuable relationships with multiple partners. However, the process of identifying and maintaining partners and collaborators can be one of the most challenging aspects of arts entrepreneurship. Partnerships can be particularly sensitive when partners are coming from different sectors and communities, and bring different objectives, resources and experiences to the table.

Through case studies, discussion and group work, this workshop will provide a framework for building partnership relationships that work in the spirit of reciprocity. We will discuss how to build a foundation for successful and diverse partnerships, including:

• Matchmaking: Identifying and communicating your assets and needs;

• Proposal: Communicating your value and engaging in successful negotiation;

• Pitch: Approaching potential partners and making your pitch;

• Assessment: Avoiding common pitfalls and knowing when and how to walk away;

• Evaluation: Monitoring partnerships and resetting a relationship that is getting off-track;

• Reciprocity: Ensuring mutual respect and benefits.

You will walk-away from this workshop with a practical assessment of your next steps, whether you are seeking to engage your first partner or growing a partnership portfolio.
