Join us in Campbell River to learn more about energy efficiency in new homes, including section 9.36 of the BC Building Code, EnerGuide, ENERGY STAR® for New Homes, and utility support
Overview
This seminar features presentations by Murray Frank and FortisBC / BC Hydro. It will explore section 9.36 of the BC Building Code and the different options builders have for compliance, EnerGuide, ENERGY STAR for New Homes, and support available from the BC utilities. This session:
- Provides an overview of the prescriptive requirements for airtightness
- Explains how to calculate the thermal resistance of assemblies
- Compares prescriptive vs. trade-off and performance paths
- Describes below-grade assembly requirements
- Provides calculation examples of ceiling, wall, fenestration and door areas
- Explains required continuity of insulation
- Describes HVAC requirements and mechanical ventilation best practices
- Discusses compliance and application
- Explains EnerGuide assessments & working with a Certified Energy Advisor
- Provides an overview of ENERGY STAR for New Homes
- Introduces the New Home Program including incentives (FortisBC / BC Hydro)
This event is eligible for 3 Continuing Professional Development credits through the Homeowner Protection Office, and 4 credits through the Building Officials' Association of BC.
The early bird rate is $90 for registrations up to February 26th. Registrations after this date pay $100. Flat fees - no GST or PST.

As an additional incentive to workshop participants, BC Hydro, FortisBC, the Homeowner Protection Office and the Province of BC are providing funding to subsidise the purchase of Building Envelope Guide for Houses - Part 9 Residential Construction from the Homeowner Protection Office. The list price on the guide is $55 plus shipping but participants can purchase it for $30 with their registration and pick it up at the workshop. The guide is an excellent resource and will compliment the knowledge gained in the workshop. It “provides practical information related to the design and construction of the building envelope for new homes constructed in accordance with Part 9 of the 2006 British Columbia Building Code (BCBC) and the 2007 Vancouver Building By-Law (VBBL)”.
