Event description

Description

Safe pedestrian behaviours are important life skills for children to learn and are very teachable concepts that children can easily grasp. However, in our busy, fast-paced modern world, motorists and pedestrians these days are increasingly distracted and in a rush. More cars than ever are on our streets. Motorists often do not follow rules. Personal computing devices are ever-more prevalent.

The age appropriate, 30 - 60 minute lessons are delivered by our very own Crossing Guards and are of free, fun, and interactive, using unique and exciting program materials (i.e., model traffic lights, roll out crosswalks, speed detectors, traffic soundtrack, puzzles) roll-playing, props and problem solving to impart the fundamental basics of pedestrian safety, starting in the JK/SK presentation and then expanding on these concepts upon in the older grades - in order to instill in students the importance of looking out for and reacting to the unexpected. They will gain critical thinking skills that they can use when encountered with situations and an understanding of how dangerous certain behaviours (such as distraction) can be in themselves and others. These valuable lessons will then be carried over into their teen years, when they themselves learn to drive.

  • JK/SK Presentations are 25-20 minutes.
  • Grade 1, 2, 3 & 4 presentations are 40 minutes.
  • Grade 5 & 6 presentations consist of 2 separate 60 minute sessions (one outside collecting data and the second int he classroom analyzing data).

PLEASE READ: Important Information about Booking

  • Due to the interactive nature of the presentations, the maximum # of students should not exceed 40 (or approx. two classes at a time). If you have a larger group we can split them up into smaller groups and do several presentations.

  • Presentations are geared towards specific age groups (i.e., JK/SK, Grade 1-2, 3-4 & 5-6) - therefore we cannot mix older and younger classes.

  • Presenters will need to set up in one location with enough space for a 6 ft by 12 ft crosswalk, and need access to an electrical outlet and smartboard and/or projector/laptop.

  • Once your booking form is received, one of our Pedestrian Safety Presenters will contact you to confirm specific dates, times and schedules.

  • When creating a presentation schedule for the Presenter - please allow 5 minutes between the presentations and 10 minutes after lunch or recess to ensure the students are settled.
