Learn How to Facilitate PEERS in School with Dr. Elizabeth Laugeson

PEERS® CERTIFIED SCHOOL BASED TRAINING PROGRAM

Registration closes October 3, 2017.

Overview:
The PEERS® Certified School-Based Training Seminar is designed to instruct educators and school-based
professionals on the administration and implementation of the educator-facilitated PEERS® for Adolescents intervention in a school-based setting.

This certified training provides a model for evidence based social skills instruction in the classroom or educational setting for teens in middle school and high school (age 11-18) with ASD, ADHD, Anxiety, Depression and other social difficulties, particularly with respect to friendships.

This training does not include instruction on how to run a parent group for the PEERS® for Adolescents intervention. This training targets the delivery of the PEERS® intervention in a school-based setting on a daily or weekly basis, only involving adolescent participants.

Topics of Instruction:

  • How to use appropriate conversational skills
  • How to choose appropriate friends
  • How to appropriately use electronic forms of communication
  • How to appropriately use humor and assess humor feedback
  • How to start, enter, and exit conversations between peers
  • How to organize successful get-togethers with friends
  • How to be a good sport when playing games/sports with friends
  • How to handle arguments and disagreements with friends and in relationships
  • How to handle rejection, teasing, bullying, and rumors/gossip
  • How to change a bad reputation

Dr. Elizabeth Laugeson, Psy.D. is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at the UCLA Semel Institute and is a licensed clinical psychologist. Dr. Laugeson is the Founder and Director of the UCLA PEERS Clinic, which is an outpatient hospital-based program providing parent-assisted social skills training for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other social impairments from preschool to adulthood. She is also the Training Director for the UCLA Tarjan Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) and Director of The Help Group – UCLA Autism Research Alliance, which is a collaborative research initiative dedicated to developing and expanding applied clinical research in the treatment of children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder. Having trained thousands of mental health professionals, educators, and families in the PEERS method, Dr. Laugeson is dedicated to developing and testing evidence-based treatments to improve social skills across the lifespan, and disseminating these empirically supported programs across the globe.
