The topic of the keynote speech for the evening is the effects the recommendations coming from the Elliot Lake Inquiry could have on the Engineering Profession should they be implemented. The presentation begins with a discussion of the circumstances surrounding the collapse of the Algo Centre Mall in Elliot Lake, Ontario on June 23, 2012. It then focuses on the Inquiry itself, topics addressed at the Inquiry and some of the evidence presented at the Inquiry. The presentation then moves into the findings of the Inquiry and the recommendations made by Mr. Justice Paul R. Belanger as a result of those findings. We then focus on what these recommendations could mean for the Engineering Profession if implemented and best practices for those in the Engineering Profession going forward.
The keynote speaker will be Todd Storms. Todd is a partner at Templeman Menninga LLP and head of the firms Construction and Corporate litigation department. Prior to joining Templeman’s, Todd practiced at International Law Firms in both Toronto and Ottawa. Todd has a wide range of litigation experience but focuses primarily on working with construction companies, architects, various trades, engineering firms, corporations and Municipalities with respect to their corporate and litigation needs. Todd was counsel for both individual engineers and an engineer firm during the RCMP investigation into the Algo Mall Centre collapse and at the Elliot Lake Inquiry. In his spare time, Todd competes in Ironman Triathlons, Ultra Marathons and Marathons and plays some trumpet when he can find the time.
Please note that if you are unable to attend this presentation ceremony, you need not register with Eventbrite. You can contact me directly at email@example.com and make arrangements either to pick up your certificate or to have it presented at the next ceremony in February 2017.
