About this Event

Philanthropists, Power, Democracy - Is This the End of Philanthropy?

Modern-day philanthropy as practiced by wealthy philanthropists, businesses, and corporations could be defined as an exercise of power. In a democratic society, power deserves scrutiny. Is there a power shift happening? If so, how is the sector managing the ethical implications? Is this the end of traditional philanthropy?

This webinar is a recorded session from the 2018 AFP Conference featuring the following panel speakers:

Ligia Peña, CFRE is the Global Legacy Manager at Greenpeace International since March 2016. For the past 15 years, she has been working with a wide range of organizations ranging from mental health, environmental education, at-risk youths to international NGOs. Working on all aspects of fundraising, communications, and management, her true passion has always been to empower small non-profits to be strong, resilient and sustainable so they may realize their important mission.Until April 2016, she was co-chair of the Board of Directors of Girls Action Foundation. She serves on several committees at AFP International and has served five years on the Quebec Chapter of the AFP. She is a member in good standing of the AFP and the CAGP-ACPDP.

Tycely Williams, CFRE has inspired individuals and institutions to invest more than $82 million dollars in charitable causes. Currently, she serves as vice president of development for YWCA USA. Over the past 20 years, Tycely advanced philanthropy at the American Red Cross, YMCA of Metropolitan Washington and four human services organizations. She is a past president of AFP DC.

Michel Freller is a social entrepreneur, speaker, teacher, and consultant. Michel has a B.A. in public administration from FGV-SP and a master's in administration from PUC-SP, with a focus on improvements in management and fundraising. He has participated in several fundraising meetings in different countries and is a postgraduate professor at SENAC and PUC-SP and of the free course at the Instituto Filantropia. Michel is an adviser to the Philanthropy Institute, Juntos.com.vc, and Engaja Brasil; a member of the scientific committee of the ABCR (Brazilian Fundraisers Association) festival; and founder of Criando Consultoria.
