Checking Out the Checklist: Improving Infection Prevention and Control Practices in Dental Care Settings

Several high profile infection prevention and control (IPAC) lapses in dental settings led to concerns about the applicability of existing tools for auditing dental practices.  In response to these concerns, a working group was established with the goal to provide a more explanatory tool to help improve consistency in IPAC lapse investigations.

In this session, participants will gain a better understanding of gaps in practice that led to examining current auditing tools and developing the new Public Health Ontario Checklists for Dental Practice Settings. From this session, participants will build capacity in identifying potential practice gaps and learn how IPAC practices can be improved in dental care settings through implementing the new checklists. The collaborative, evaluative approach taken to developing the new checklists will also be discussed.

Presenters: Anne Augustin, Dr. Chris Swayze, Giulia Galloro

Anne Augustin: Anne started her career as a medical laboratory technologist.  She obtained and has held her C.I.C. designation from the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology since 1991. Her work experience as an IPAC professional has included long-term care, tertiary health care, and community acute care.  Anne is part of the faculty for two national IPAC courses and she currently works as a Program IPAC Specialist at Public Health Ontario.

Dr. Chris Swayze: Dr. Chris Swayze is the Manager, Reports in the Professional Conduct and Regulatory Affairs department of the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario. He is responsible for overseeing a team of dentists who investigate potential cases of professional misconduct, including IPAC investigations. Dr. Swayze is also the contact person at the College for the Public Health Units (PHU) with respect to potential IPAC lapses and investigations in dental offices.

Giulia Galloro:  Giulia Galloro is the Practice Advisor at the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario and is a resource contact for infection control at the College. Giulia has practiced dental hygiene for over sixteen years and has worked as a clinical instructor for nine years at an accredited dental hygiene program in Toronto.
