Weekend Workshop:

  • Saturday October 6, 10am-4pm

This 6-hour workshop is part of the "Be Your Own Marketing Machine" series which includes a Photoshop & Lightroom Editing workshop and a "Build & Maintain Your Own Website" workshop, coming to Swinton's soon.

Every artist should keep good documentation of their artwork. Photographing artwork requires technical knowledge and patience but you can do a great job with whatever equipment you have. In this workshop you will learn some key skills for taking professional photographs without the extra costs, and how to best capture the quality of your art for your portfolio. Learn how to use settings on your camera to create images suitable for submission, web and print.

This workshop will cover key concepts including white balance, colour correction, camera and light positioning, profiling, focal length, exposure settings as well as basic editing in Lightroom and Photoshop.

After completing the workshop, participants will be able to use a professional lighting set-up to photograph their artwork (Max 3 pieces).

Requirements: Camera with manual settings (ideally DSLR capable of shooting in RAW format); Tripod; Camera manual (recommended); Laptop with Adobe Lightroom & Photoshop installed (optional).

Note: you can get a subscription to Adobe Photographer Plan which includes Lightroom and Photoshop for about $15/month. They also offer a 1 month free trial.

Topics Covered:

  • Your camera settings - Shutter, ISO, Aperture
  • Setting your white balance
  • Using the correct focal length
  • Using X-Rite ColorChecker Passport
  • Creating ideal lighting conditions

Instructor Bio: Milo Dlouhy

Hello, my name is Milo. You may have heard my name, as I have been hiding in the back of Swinton’s for about 9 years now. They call me the web guy but I do other things as well. I’m an artist, a graphic designer, photographer and a web developer. My photography is a passion but I find myself using it commercially all the time, shooting portraits, weddings, products and artwork. I have shot artwork for many artists, websites, galleries and magazines, including the Glenbow Museum and Canadian Art Magazine.
