Event description

Description

Dr. Vanessa Allen, Chief, Medical Microbiology, Public Health Ontario, will be presenting on the use of genomics in public health.

The use of genomics in public health offers higher resolution tools for the detection and response to infectious diseases threats and enhanced capacity to understand evolution and transmission patterns of pathogens of interest. The additional predictive capacity to infer patterns, antimicrobial resistance and virulence are also made possible in real time.

This presentation will describe some of the early uses and successes of the use of genomic methods in the application of diseases of public health significance, some of the limitations of these approaches, and potential future directions for prioritization and application of the use of genomics for public health in Ontario.

Dr. Allen will focus on applications in Bacterial enterics, TB, measles, and HIV.
