Places to Grow and Places to Preserve
Mon, 17 October 2016, 7:00 PM – 8:45 PM EDT
Join Marcy Burchfield, Executive Director of the Neptis Foundation at the Hamilton Central Public Library as she demonstrates a newly-released interactive information and mapping platform, the Neptis Geoweb, to discuss issues related to the Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe and the Greenbelt.
Using the Neptis Geoweb, Burchfield will discuss where future growth is slated to go, hot spots where development pressure is greatest, and the implications of proposed changes to the existing Growth Plan.
The Growth Plan is a provincial land use plan which attempts to bring a more coordinated approach to planning across the Toronto region (including the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area) and address the problems associated with low-density urban sprawl. These include road congestion, the loss of prime agricultural land and natural heritage, the misalignment of transit infrastructure investments with areas of future population and employment growth, and ballooning municipal debt due to the expense of servicing low-density development.
