Description

Plastic Free Living

Plastics products have only been in the home for a few generations and yet today's society has forgotten how to store food, clean our homes and live our lives without plastics and single use packaging. We will be discussing chemical components of plastics and how they may cause harm, how to transition away from single use items that are overwhelming our landfill, looking at classic reusable and sustainable products and newer innovations that help to avoid plastics in the home.

Instructor Bio:
After decades of living very sustainably at home, growing her own food, composting, collecting rain water, making all her own soaps and cosmetics from natural ingredients, participating in beach clean ups and other volunteer activities on her days off only to return to a corporate workplace that produced massive amounts of trash, Leanne Gallagher Allen decided she wanted to be more than just a “drop in the bucket” when it came to positively impacting the future of our environment. She realized that the best way to have a greater impact was to make it as easy and affordable as possible for other people in her community to live more sustainably too.

Dissatisfied with the overabundance of plastic packaging and the lack of product selection, Leanne searched for a way to provide simple and effective cleaning solutions without the worry of petrochemicals and excessive single use plastic packaging. In July 2017 Leanne opened the first Zero Waste focused shop on Vancouver Island which encouraged people to bring in their own clean empty bottles and containers to be filled by weight over and over again with all natural, Canadian made products. www.westcoastrefill.com/

The Compost Education Centre is located on unceded and occupied Indigenous territories, specifically the land of the Lekwungen speaking people—the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations. These nations are two of many, made up of individuals who have lived within the porous boundaries of what is considered Coast Salish, Nuu-Chah-Nulth and Kwakwa'wakw Territory (Vancouver Island) since time immemorial. At the CEC we seek to respect, honour and continually grow our own understandings of Indigenous rights and history, and to fulfill our responsibilities as settlers, who live and work directly with the land and its complex, vital ecologies and our diverse, evolving communities.

Compost Education Centre memberships get you free workshops, discounts at garden centres around town and more great perks! Sign up or learn more on our website.
