Event Details

We invite you to join us for an afternoon of engaging and fun playtesting with your children. We're conducting a study involving mobile app games and how families interact with them as co-players in the experience. We've got two hours of segmented activities designed to inspire a dialogue and gather some ideas from two key groups - the parents and the kids! It will be a fun afternoon of playing games and talking about them!

We're looking specifically for:

  • Parents with children aged 6-8

  • No more than one parent and one child (space is limited)

Our day will consist of play-testing existing app games on provided iPad devices, paper-and-pencil exercises, and some old-fashioned discussions about your experiences with playing app games alongside your children.

Snacks and refreshments will be provided when you when you arrive.

Note: Confirmed participants will receive a consent form that goes over the session agenda and considerations for participants in detail a week before the date. Please sign this form after reading it and return the signed copy back to the e-mail address provided in the consent form.

Session Agenda

  • Activity 1 - Discussion Period - 30 minutes

  • Activity 2 - Playtesting Session - 45 minutes

  • Activity 3 - Character Popularity Poll - 15 minutes

  • Activity 4 - Design-A-Game Exercise - 30 Minutes

At the end of the session, parents & guardians will be informed of exit surveys that we invite participants to fill out. These will help make our next sessions even more engaging and useful for both our research team and the participants we have come in.

Participants will receive compensation in the form a pre-paid VISA card valued at $50.00.

Space is limited. Please reserve one ticket for you and your child.

How can I contact the organiser with any questions?

Please contact with any questions regarding the event.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Parking at Ryerson University is accessible around TRSM at various locations.

The session facility is located in downtown Toronto and there are many options for parking. All of the options at the link below are less than a 5-minute walking distance from TRSM. You can also view Toronto’s Parking Authority Website ( or download the App (Green P) to your iOS device.

Please click this link for all accessible parking areas around TRSM (scroll to 'Parking' page).

If arriving by transit, you can use the TTC for subway, streetcars, and buses ($3.00). The closest subway stop to TRSM is the “Dundas Square” stop on the Yonge-University (Yellow/#1) subway line. It is less than one block away from TRSM, between the Eaton Centre and Best Buy.

Do I have to bring anything?

All devices and materials for the session will be provided by the research team.

Can we choose which activities we want to do?

We'll encourage all participants to take part in the activities (we think they're fun!), but please let one of the research team know if your child wants to sit out for one. We'll provide some space in the session room to pass the time until the activity is over.
