Welcome to Plays in Cafes, where the audience orders their entertainment off the menu. Hot or cold? Sweet or spicy? It’s never the same experience twice.

Guests receive a menu where each item tells a story. The audience then charts the artistic course of action by ordering their entertainment off the menu. The flavour of plays includes rich, bitter, dry, sweet and spicy.

The spicy play by Chandra Pepper: Steve is newly single and clueless when it comes to dating. Wanting to add some spice to his life, he tries out a ‘flavoured inspired’ speed dating night. After sampling the many ‘flavours,’ Steve may end up sticking with a good ol’ PB & J.

The sweet play by Laura Katherine Hayes: When they were teenagers, Joe and Maxine always made a promise: “If we’re both single at 40 ... let’s get married.” It’s Maxine’s 40th birthday tomorrow. Will they keep their promise?

The rich play by Alex Karolyi: Richard and Bella are having their first date after meeting at an affluent event. She learns throughout the course of their date that he may not be as rich as he let on. She also may have embellished her own assets to his dismay. ‘No legacy is so rich as honesty.’

The bitter play by Coco LaRain: Bitter or Better? That is the question when it comes to love and loss. Will these two lost lovers find a way to look past their past and believe in love again, or will they end up ending it all?

The dry play by Mani Eustis: Marriage is perhaps the greatest and most challenging of human relationships, even more so if that relationship is with yourself. You are invited to the impromptu ceremony of your dear waitress — she is tired of you calling her honey and asking for her number. Tonight she ties the knot with her one true love ... herself.

Plays In Cafes, created by Shadowpath Theatre Productions artistic director Alex Karolyi, launched in Newmarket in 2006. It has since provided a platform for new works and has frequented dozens of cafés in six different municipalities in York region. In 2015, Plays In Cafes expanded its reach into Toronto and Vancouver via the Fringe.

Plays In Cafes won Best of Fringe in 2018 and continued its run in Orangeville in July!

Plays In Cafes showcases the Shadowpath Femme5 with an all-female production team and new plays created by women and directed by Rosanna Saracino.
