PLUS Art Festival: Featured Talk Series

We build a thriving community through artistic production and dynamic programming including artist talks, workshops, panels and screenings. We do this by collaborating with artists, government partners, media, associations, and local businesses to build a robust and agile platform for showing and talking about interdisciplinary contemporary fine art practice.

Click-Bait & Open Letter Wars: New Issues in the Digital Sphere of Art Criticism
Date: Sunday June 10th, 2018
Time: 11:00AM – 12:30PM
Location: The Ballroom, Gladstone Hotel
Suggested Donation: $10.00

Sky Goodden, Editor, MOMUS
• Moderated by Rosemary Heather, freelance curator & critic

The online world of art criticism has become more fast-paced and polemical than ever as ‘open letters’ have become an increasingly impassioned tool for critics, activists and artist; and click rates guide the stewardship of content and distribution. Amidst a political climate after Hannah Black’s infamous Facebook-published open letter critiquing the 2017 Whitney Biennial inclusion of Dana Schultz’s painting, what are the responsibilities of critics to engage with current questions in art criticism? This topical panel discussion will explore the changing roles of the critic as it relates to resisting manufactured consensus, interrogating the successful, exalting the unknown and arguing for ambiguity and complexity. Also, even if the data could measure success and general interest, should that information control editorial choices?

New Currents in Art Collecting: Examining Influences and Trends in Various Art Markets
Date: Sunday June 10th, 2018
Time: 1:00PM – 2:30PM
Location: The Ballroom, Gladstone Hotel
Suggested Donation: $10.00

• Ken Montague, Wedge Curatorial Projects
Bill Clarke, Art Collector & Associate Director, Angell Gallery
• Moderated by Emily McInnes, Director of Eye Buy Art

From institutional mandates, to personal whimsies and passions, to record high prices; in the art world, there are a variety of motivations to buying and collecting contemporary art. This panel discussion examines the many trends, influences and motivations intersecting public institutions, private collections, art dealers and artists (collectors in their own right). Issues of technology and distribution will play a role in critical discussion Instagram and other mobile applications both complicate and simplify the process. How do various kinds of collectors re-think and re-shape the traditional approaches to collecting and, consequently, how do they change the global market? How do actors of the art market respond to the rise of the digital generation of art collectors?

Award Fever: The Proliferation of the Art Prize
Date: Sunday June 10th, 2018
Time: 3:00PM – 4:30PM
Location: The Ballroom, Gladstone Hotel
Suggested Donation: $10.00

• David Liss, Curator, MOCA Toronto
Patrick Cruz, Artist, winner of RBC Painting Competition
• Moderated by Rafi Ghanaghounian

This panel discussion will examine the exponential growth of art awards and prizes in the Canadian contemporary art scene. With a plethora of art prizes available for artists such as the Sobey Art Award / Prix Sobey pour les arts, the AIMIA/AGO Prize, the RBC Painting Competition, BMO 1st Art Award, Bombay Sapphire Award; how do we determine the voices and values we deem ‘award-worthy’? Do prizes help build an artist's career? Does the current proliferation of the art prize devalue its place on artists’ CVs and what effect do they have on the institutions themselves? Looking at this issue from the perspective of a curator, past award recipient and jury member, this talk will address the pertinent questions surrounding our fervent desire for more art awards and prizes.
