Podcasting: Finding the Story

co-produced by VIVO and SFU's School of Communication

Learn radio reporting and audio storytelling in this podcasting primer with producer-journalists Madeline Taylor & Alex de Boer of UBC radio CiTR 101.9 FM!

2 sessions, 6 hours total // $75, or $53 with any VIVO Producer Membership (+GST)

  • Session 1: Thursday, April 26, 6pm-9pm
  • Session 2: Thursday, May 3, 6pm-9pm

One extended subsidy for this workshop available:

Prerequisite: Participants need to have listened to podcasts, and have an idea of what style and structure they want to attempt for their imaged podcast. Some basic experience of editing audio or video is an asset.

All equipment will be provided, including headphones, though participants are welcome to bring their own preferred headphones if they wish.

This workshop will enable you to start your own podcast series by introducing the fundamentals of writing, interviewing, listening, recording, and editing for radio story production. Through hands on exercises, each student will work toward creating the first episode of their new podcast series.

Topics covered:

  • Podcast styles and genre structures
  • Hosting and engaging an audience
  • Structuring your time with a listener
  • Writing for radio/podcasts
  • Interviewing techniques
  • Basic audio recording using a handheld recording device or smartphone
  • Basic editing with Audacity and narrative pacing

During Session 1, learn how to get a great interview by developing a script, formulating appropriate questions, and operating an audio recorder.

For homework, interview a person of interest (can be friend or family member), posing a minimum of four questions and collecting 10 minutes of audio to use for Session 2. Come to Session 2 with the interview transcribed and best sound bites highlighted.Don’t have an audio recorder to finish homework? Email education@vivomediaarts to coordinate borrowing one.

For Session 2, bring in your audio and learn how to develop a solid structure by writing a script and editing it to reveal the story.

VIVO thanks SFU's School of Communication for generously supporting this workshop!
