Learn radio interviewing, reporting, and audio storytelling in this podcasting primer with producer-journalists Madeline Taylor & Alex de Boer of UBC radio CiTR 101.9 FM!

3 sessions, 9 hours total // $210, or $160 with any VIVO Producer Membership (+GST)

Session 1: Tue Feb 5, 6pm - 9:30pm
Session 2: Tue Feb 12, 6pm - 9:30pm
Session 3: Tue Feb 19, 6pm - 9:30pm

Prerequisite: Participants need to have listened to podcasts, and have an idea of what style and structure they want to attempt for their imaged podcast. Some basic experience of editing audio or video is an asset.

All equipment will be provided, including headphones, though participants are welcome to bring their own preferred headphones and recording devices if they wish.

This workshop will enable you to start your own interview-based podcast series by introducing the fundamentals of writing, interviewing, listening, recording, and editing for radio story production. You'll pair up with a partner to record. Then through hands on exercises, you'll practice the skills you need to create your own podcast.

  • Podcast styles and genre structures
  • Hosting and engaging an audience
  • Structuring your time with a listener
  • Writing for radio/podcasts
  • Interviewing techniques
  • Basic audio recording using a handheld recording device or smartphone
  • Basic editing with Audacity and narrative pacing

Madeline Taylor is a radio/podcast producer from Vancouver, British Columbia, with credits at ABC, the BBC and various campus/community stations. She has worked in Campus/Community radio since 2013, is the current Programming Director at CiTR 101.9FM, and sits on the Board of Directors for the National Campus/Community Radio Association. 

   

 

 

Alex de Boer is a journalist and nonfiction storyteller based in Vancouver. Alex is the Podcast Coordinator at CiTR 101.9FM where she heads the station's Spoken Word Department. She is a reporter and producer on CiTR's weekly news show, Democracy Watch and the Vancouver current affairs podcast, At-Large (formerly Seeking Office). Alex holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and History and a Master’s of Journalism from the University of British Columbia. She is the the 2017 winner of the Norman Lidster Prize in Documentary Filmmaking and received the award for "Best in News Programming" and an honourable mention for her audio documentary "Lhamo & the Princess," at the 2018 NCRA Community Radio Awards.

VIVO Media Arts

VIVO MEDIA ARTS CENTRE, incorporated in 1973 as the Satellite Video Exchange Society (SVES), is Vancouver’s oldest media arts access centre. VIVO continues to fulfill its founding vision by directly supporting independent artists, community-based producers and activists to develop and exchange their skills in a supportive environment. Our members gather around the tools and material means of production to invent new understandings, new genres and new friendships. Reflecting both the diversity of contemporary technologies and the symbiotic communities that coalesce around new forms of knowledge and creativity, our programming fosters formal, aesthetic and critical approaches to media arts practice.
