Event Details

On June 17, 1958, just as a crane was about to join two sections of an arch on the new Second Narrows Bridge, several spans collapsed, dropping 79 workers into the waters of Burrard Inlet 30 metres below. Eighteen died on impact or were drowned, and a diver later perished looking for bodies. The cause was later determined to be a miscalculation by bridge engineers that resulted in the failure of a temporary arm holding an anchor span. The bridge was renamed in 1994 as the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge in their honour.

The newly renamed Jubilate Vocal Ensemble commemorates the tragedy in Poetry in Bridges, a concert whose theme encompasses the many roles of bridges – physical, emotional and spiritual. Its main work, When I think of Bridges, is an 11-part choral suite by Jubilate conductor and well-known composer Dr. Larry Nickel based on Falsework, a 2007 retrospective on the bridge collapse by Vancouver poet Gary Geddes, who will be in attendance at the concert.

Other bridge-themed works in the concert include Paul Simon’s A Bridge over Troubled Waters and Lionel Daunai’s classic Le Pont Mirabeau. The audience will also be treated to some lively up-tempo pieces and vocal jazz. And no fewer than four pieces are the products of Jubilate’s own in-house writing talents: Across the Void (tenor David Archer), Welcome Home (bass John Nickel), I Am Voyager (tenor Robin Salkeld), and Crossing the Bar (tenor Peter Sicotte). Four original bridge-themed pieces by well-known composers – Bridge Builder by Don Macdonald, The Pierless Bridge by Mark Sirett, Step On It by Ed Henderson, and Trio of Tamaracks by Lloyd Burritt – were commissioned by Jubilate expressly for this concert.
