Event description

Description

During the two week OPEN HOUSE period ( November 8th -22nd) we have some very special programming designed to focus on the era of the First World War and to reflect on Canada’s 150th birthday.

On Remembrance Day, Saturday November 11th, Professor D.M.R.Bentley will give a talk on THE POETRY OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
Prof. Bentley is very well known for his close reading of literary works and his interest in a historical approach to the teaching of British and Canadian literature. He is the winner of a national teaching award and the 2015 Killam Prize for the Humanities. There will be a chance to ask questions and to talk with the lecturer following the talk.

Dr. Hadley T. Williams, for whom the house at 101 Windermere Road was built, joined The Canadian Medical Corps, part of the Overseas Expeditionary Force in 1916 and went to England. He served as Medical Officer-in-Charge of a military hospital in England in 1917. He and his wife Elsie moved back to Canada in July of that year and moved into their new house , the centenary of which we are celebrating this year. It is to mark this connection to the Great War that this talk is being given.
