Description

Politics in the Pub: Western Engagement vs. Russian Interference in Elections - Is This Two Sides of the Same Coin?

Join the Canadian International Council (CIC) (Halifax Branch) for a discussion on this important topic with Kevin Deveux, a Canadian lawyer and an international expert on parliaments and political parties. A former Member of the Legislative Assembly for Nova Scotia, he has worked in this field for more than 15 years and with groups such as the National Democratic Institute, United Nations Development Programme and International IDEA.

Event Description:

For almost 50 years, democratic countries have been supporting other countries that have chosen to transition to a democracy. When done under the right circumstances, this support can be a significant factor in turning a transition decision into a sustainable democracy. However, when done badly, it has resulted in the picking of winners and losers in countries emerging from authoritarian states and creating a perception that the work is more about overturning antagonistic governments than about democratic values.

More recently, we have seen the evidence of Russian interference in western elections. From the funding of organizations to the use of bots on social media, there are clear examples of stirring dissent and creating polarizing perspectives that can sow doubt in the democratic process.

Are the Russians doing no more than the West and are these equivalent tactics being used to destabilize countries that are seen as opposed to the world view of the instigator? Or is the work of the West founded on support for basic human rights while the work of the Russians is based on authoritarian values?.

$5.00 for CIC members and $10.00 for non-members, and includes light apppetizers as well as complimentary beer, wine or non-alcoholic beverage.
