Event description

Description

Main Theme of the workshop: Harvesting, Cleaning and Storing Mason Bee Cocoons.

What is an orchard without it's pollinators? A whole lot of trees with not a fruit in sight! It's thanks to our hard-working insect friends, flying from flower to flower, that we get any fruit at the Welland Community Orchard at all. Join our Native Pollinator stewards Brian Yeo and Tom Leahy to learn about the unsung heroes of our orchard and wider ecosystem!

In this hands-on workshop we'll be taking apart our mason bee condos to clean them, and taking a look at our leaf cutter, sand wasp and bumble bee habitat too. We will discuss the lifecycle, habitat and needs of some of our favourite pollinators so we can support them in supporting us.

Participants are encouraged to bring their Bee houses so they can do “Hands On” harvesting; to open and harvest the cocoons. The workshop will be “Harvesting Bee Cocoons from any type of Mason Bee House and cleaning, drying, and storing the Bee Cocoons over winter".

We will also cover all aspects of Mason Bees and Native Bees including all the different ways to build housing to encourage them.

Instructors: Tom & Brian - mentors of Rex Welland and local native pollinator stewards!

Tom has handled Native Bees since 2001. With Rex Welland as his Mentor, they put on demos at Seedy Saturday in Victoria and collaborated on Native Bees for many years.

His hobby has now turned into something more than just a hobby. He manufactures Mason Bee Houses and supplies local stores and other retail markets with Mason Bee Cocoons and Bee Houses.

However, this workshop will also demonstrate how to promote Mason Bees very inexpensively!

Brian and Tom are dedicated stewards with a wealth of knowledge they share warmly with the community.

This is a family friendly event! Kids, please feel free to bring your adults.

Drop in fee: $25, cash or cheques accepted.
