Join ASPSH as we host Dr. Marty Klein for Pornography 2019: What do we need to serve those we work with?

Whether you’re an educator, therapist, student, parent, healthcare professional, or community member, pornography is relevant to you. These two half-day workshops will help you understand the how, why, and what of people's relationship with pornography and what kinds of support are needed to navigate this tricky media form. This event is FREE to attend with light snacks throughout and an hour break for lunch. Lunch will not be provided.

Morning Seminar:

  • What porn leaves out - and why it matter

  • What students, at-risk populations, and everyone else needs to know about porn

  • How today’s Moral Panic spreads myths about porn - and how believing these things makes us less effective

  • According to science, what is the relationship between porn use and violence?

  • Using porn’s typical themes as teachable moments - and discussing porn themes that reflect positive values

  • Porn-related questions that are relevant in healthcare settings

Afternoon Seminar:

  • Evaluating and successfully treating couples and individuals distressed about pornography

  • Unpacking the narratives of each partner - and helping partners understand each other

  • Talking about masturbation and sex when people hesitate or resist

  • How society’s PornPanic has undermined the field of therapy, bringing junk neuro-science, gender stereotypes, and sex-negativity into our practices

  • Why the “porn addiction” model can’t resolve the deeper issues - and learning a model that can

  • Why it’s crucial that we never assume that someone’s porn preferences reflect their actual desires

  • Identifying the relationship deficits and conflicts - such as desire discrepancies, unresolved infidelity, poor body image, performance anxiety, and emotional isolation - that couples avoid by making porn the issue.
