Portrait Craft | Creative Light

Every photographer knows that ight can make or break a photo. We long for that beautiful golden hour light but we can't always shoot in the early morning and late evening.  So, we throw flash into the mix to extend our shooting hours and fumble through a lot of bad photos.  Or, we shy away from the flash because it "looks fake".
Lighting does't have to be a struggle to learn.  In this three-day workshop I introduce you to lighting concepts and fundamentals that will unlock your creativity.  We'll cover everything from basic headshot to environmental portraiture.  We'll discuss different lighting scenarios, flash, strobes and modifiers in plain English.
But, this isn't just a lighting workshop.  We will discuss what makes a strong protrait including posing, eliminating distractions, and telling a story.  Each day I will do several live demonstrations, walking you through my entire thought process.  You'll watch me create a plan, select my equipment, troubleshoot and work with each model to create something beautiful.
This is a hands-on workshop.  After each demo you will have a chance to work in small groups to create your own photos.  I will cycle through each group, provide one-on-one critiques throughout the process and help you turn the image in your head into a reality.
Creating the photos in camera is just a part of equation.  On our final day together, I will do editing demos in both Lightroom and Photoshop so you can see how I add the final touches to make those portraits really stand out.  You'll have a chance to edit your own images.
This workshop is geared towards both amateur and professional photographers who want to take their portraiture to the next level.  A DSLR or SLR camera is required.  All lighting equipment will be provided. Please review our recommended gear list for more info.

Schedule of Activities

As we will be on nature’s schedule for a good portion of the workshop we will be keeping the plan flexible so we can adjust to weather conditions.

Day 1 – Sunday

Morning – Our adventures into portraiture will begin at 9am with presentations, discussion and demos.

Afternoon – After lunch, we are back in the classroom for another demo and then on to photographing models.

Evening – We will wrap up for the day around 7pm.

Day 2 – Monday

Morning – We will meet at 10am for our first location shoot.  Each location will start with a demo and followed by photographing models.

Afternoon – After lunch we will meet at another location and repeat the process.  The idea is to allow all participants the opporuntiy to work with several models in different lighting conditions and locations.

Evening – After dinner we will meet for a sunset and blue hour shoot including more demos and shooting.  Rotations will be fast during this session as lighting conditions will change rapidly.  Teamwork will be a necessity as is often the case with these kinds of shoots.

Day 3 – Tuesday

Morning – We’ve done a lot of shooting already and but we're not quite done. Another location, another demo and more shooting.

Afternoon – After lunch we are back to the classroom for editing demos and individual editing time.  Each participant will be asked to share a couple photos for critique as well a couple favourites to celebrate all the hard work of the past few days. Critiques are one of the most beneficial parts of the workshop experience.  Don't worry, critiques are meant to be an encouraging thing and delivered in constructive manner.  After showing off your best images we'll open the floor up to questions and answers in case as few things have popped into mind that you haven't had a chance to ask yet.
Evening – We’ll wrap up by 5:00pm.  We'll make dinner reservations for anyone interested (optional) and can arrange for newcomers to Newfoundland to the Screeched In!
